New Characters at MACq 01

A renowned wildlife campaigner has been honoured with his very own room, following the ground breaking work he has done for Tasmania’s furry friends. Immortalised on copper by Tasmanian artist Cathy Edwards, Bonorong’s Greg Irons joins 12 new characters printed on some of MACq 01’s guest rooms to celebrate the hotel’s fifth birthday, with the room’s decor fit to match their personality traits. He joins a list of prominent new characters that include Enid Lyons, Kate Weindorfer, Marjorie Bligh, Annie Beechey, Eleanor Alliston, Brenda Hean, Dorothea Henslowe, Mary Roberts, Peter Sculthorpe, Joseph Keen, Ida West, and ‘the Marvellous Corricks family’.

Welcome to the MACq 01 Hotel in Hobart, housed in a deliciously modern building in the historic old wharf area. The hotel’s storytelling tours are complimentary for guests. As Lucy unveils the hidden haunts and hangouts of former convict immigrants, she tells me to take a look through the retro viewfinder, distributed to each person attending the tour, for a glimpse of what life was like then. Single immigrant women were often employed as domestic servants while skilled men with young children were given jobs as mechanics and agricultural labourers.

We check into one of Hobart’s most vibrant and contemporary hotels in a prime waterfront position. I’m standing on the balcony of my Premium Waterfront Suite at Hobart’s MACq 01 Hotel, overlooking Hobart’s old wharves at Sullivan’s Cove and Constitution Dock. The golden sun is mellowing in the late afternoon, softly glowing on Mount Wellington in the distance, as seagulls swoop and flap in the light breeze. A cruise ship has just pulled out of the nearby Macquarie Wharf No. 2 cruise ship terminal.

There's an incredible bathroom with a double sink and mahoosive shower space, a walk-in changing room and then a bedroom that I'm pretty sure is the size of my first apartment – which I shared with three other people. The bedroom has its own private balcony that stares out to sea, and a spot where I would happily sit with a cocktail in hand every damn night of the week.
