Once upon a fabled encounter, a luxury storytelling hotel met a famed boutique distillery in a rendezvous for the ages. Introducing Gin Tales, an exclusive and immersive experience bringing MACq 01 Hotel together with the renowned McHenry Distillery.  

Step into the world of Tasmania’s legendary characters one sip at a time with our immersive gin experience inspired by iconic Tasmanians. 

Our bespoke suite of five gins encapsulate the essence of the 114 Tasmanian characters that feature throughout our hotel walls, each gin inspired by their bold and beguiling personality traits.  

From the no-nonsense Hearty & Resilient to the flair of the Curious & Creative, each gin captures a distinct character trait. Savour the intensity of Grounded, Yet Exceptional, the determination of Fighting Believers, or the playful spirit of Colourful & Quirky. The curated gins have been thoughtfully considered with every ingredient choice to match the stories of their muse.  

Australia’s southernmost distillery, McHenry’s is nestled on the stunning Tasman Peninsula, and uses locally sourced botanicals and pure Tasmanian water from their spring to craft award-winning gins that capture the essence of the State. As true connoisseurs, Tasmanians appreciate the complexity and character of McHenry’s gins, making the exclusive MACq 01 gins the perfect choice for those seeking out a truly authentic Tasmanian experience.

Our MACq 01 gin range:

Curious & Creative: We really did get curious and creative with this bespoke creation – a harmonious symphony of seemingly disparate flavours. The zesty pairing of lemon verbena and strawberry gum combined with fennel seed, mountain pepper and aniseed myrtle surprises on the tongue, a testament of the imaginative spirit.  

Grounded, Yet Exceptional: Just as the sweetness of honey, orange and the depth of aniseed myrtle reflect their earthy nature, here the kick of ginger and the aromatic dash of rosemary linger with barrel-aged gin, evoking their enduring presence. 

Colourful & Quirky: Sweet but feisty, the combination of lime and strawberry perfectly captures the Colourful & Quirky spirit. The more subtle undertones of wax flower and juniper combine the flavours, while a touch of gold puts the sparkle in the Colourful & Quirky.  

Hearty & Resilient: Just as Tasmania’s island flora—sloe berries, seaweed, pigface, and lemon myrtle—thrive in harsh environments, so too do these individuals, flourishing despite life’s many challenges. Their enduring power of the human spirit is reflected in a gin that celebrates the rugged, relentless beauty of Tasmania. 

Fighting Believer: The strong flavours of cardamom, mountain pepper and ginger are pleasingly counterbalanced by the more mellow orange and wild damson plum, together forming a fitting tribute to Tasmania’s Fighting Believers.
